Well Water Treatment: The Owner's Playbook
More than 43 million Americans - about 15% of the population - drink from private wells, and the Safe Drinking Water Act does not cover them. No utility tests your water, files your reports, or fixes your problems. The good news: the playbook is well understood.
Step 1 - Test annually, and after events
The EPA recommends yearly testing for coliform bacteria, nitrates, TDS and pH - plus after flooding, well work, or any change in taste, color or odor. State-certified labs and health departments are the reliable route in. Our testing guide covers panels.
Step 2 - Treat in the right order
- Sediment first - a spin-down or cartridge prefilter protects everything downstream.
- Iron / sulfur / manganese next, if tests show them (oxidation or specialty media).
- Softener for hardness, ahead of the water heater.
- Carbon for taste, odor and many organics.
- UV disinfection for bacteria - placed after filtration so the water is clear enough for UV to work.
- Point-of-use RO at the kitchen tap for drinking-water-grade finishing (lead, PFAS, nitrates).
Step 3 - Size for flow, maintain on schedule
Whole-house stages are rated in gallons per minute - undersizing is the most common well-system mistake. Maintenance is the second: cartridges and UV lamps are consumables with dates, and our reminder tool works for whole-house schedules too. For buy-online starting points see the whole-house rankings - and for complex wells (arsenic, low pH, heavy iron), a local well-water specialist with your lab report in hand beats any website, including this one.
